Thai NR Industry

Rubber was introduced to Thailand in the early 1900s.

Since 1991, Thailand had overtaken to be the world's largest producer and exporter of natural rubber and annual production growth had been 4-7% in the last 5 years.

Rubber is one of the country's top 10 export commodities.

In year 2004, Thailand produced 2.83 million tonnes or 34% of the world's production of 8.41 million tonnes of natural rubber.

The Thai NR industry consisted of about 200 rubber factories and 100 exporting companies.  There are more than 3 million farmers (nearly 5% of the population in Thailand) working in over 2 million hectares of rubber plantation.

97% of the plantations are smallholdings with areas of 2-4 hectares located mostly in the southern and north-eastern provinces of Thailand.  The average yield of NR is 1560 kg/ha/year in Thailand.

Smallholders sell their rubber in the form of un-smoked sheets, cup lumps or latex to a few hundred outlets comprising local dealers or the bigger district dealers who then re-sell them to processors/exporters.

The Thai NR industry is supported by many governmental and private institutions, namely:

Public:
Rubber Research Institute of Thailand
The Rubber Estate Organisation
The Office of Rubber Replanting Aid Fund
The Rubber Smallholders Cooperatives

Private:
The Thai Rubber Association
The Thai Latex Produce and Exporter Association

NR production in Thailand totaled 2.83 million tonnes comprising

- RSS     1.33 million tonnes
- STR     1.02 million tonnes
- Latex  0.48 million tonnes

Exports are to 67 countries including Europe (23%), China (20%) Japan (20%), Malaysia (13%), USA (10%) and South Korea (7%)
